I just did my first oil change on my new-old Honda Fit.

Above is the old oil filter on the left, the new oil filter on the right.

This is why I do my own changes.

The garbage oil filter and garbage oil they used for my “free oil change” with the car purchase is worth less than $0 to me. I only drove about 1000km with this oil and filter and the oil was already surprisingly dark.

Normally I would have done an oil change immediately.... but lack of free time and the weather wasn’t cooperative until today.

Edit: Forgot to mention that my engine would make ticking sounds under load at higher RPM and when cold.  That has stopped with the new oil and filter.

I also always change my oil after I buy a car. Why take chances on something I can do in 30 minutes for a few dozen bucks?

How old-new is your new-old Fit? I’m considering a  J azz for my wife and I'm gathering opinions on the 1.3 i-Vtec

Color is not a good indicator of oil condition.

However, I do hate those tiny-ass undersize filters. They do that to consolidate applications, so they use the smallest filter that will screw on.

Nah... you’re looking for the wrong engine!

You need to come to North America... the paradise where all Fits are 1.5L

The Fit you’re considering should be the same basic car as what I have.

And the 1.3L should be of the same Honda L-series engine range.

The engine is smoother and quieter than the Focus or Aerio. I’d say it feels as smooth as the 2000 Saab 9-3 I had... which was a 2L turbo with a balance shaft with an isolated subframe to filter vibrations. However the Saab engine was way more powerful.

In 1.5L form, the 109Hp Honda isn’t overly powerful. It’s less powerful than the 2L engines in the Suzuki or Focus I had. You have to rev it to get power... but it revs nicely and it’s still more than enough power for day to day needs. But this is not the car that will win at the drag strip. And Clearly the 1.3L will have less power

Also note that the Honda L series is prone to ticking sounds. As they age, you may have to get a valve adjustment done to make it go away... HOWEVER... in my case, the ticking was being caused by an undersized oil filter and likely the wrong grade of oil (5w20 or 0w20 recommended).   The shitty oil filter was probably restricting oil flow in my case.  After changing the oil, the ticking went away shortly after.

The shifter is very nice... nicer that on the Ford Focuseseses or Suzuki Aerio I had. The shifter in the Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe felt almost as good.

Very good handling for the class of car. The suspension seems to age better than the Focus. A new Focus would handle better. But an Focus of similar age and mileage would handle worse.

The interior is very efficiently designed with rear seats that fold flat and can also be folded in such a way where the rear seat back and base is up so it gives you another way of fitting bulky items into the car. The trunk space with the seats up is actually a bit more than other larger vehicles like the PT Cruiser, Focus hatchback or the Nissan Juke.

The interior quality seems fine to me given the class of car. This car also has electric power steering... which also feels fine to me.. though not as good as a car with manual steering (which I’ve owned in the past).

Doing oil changes on the Fit is easy. The oil drain plug and the oil filter are both easy to reach with no under body disassembly to reach them.

So far, the Fit seems like a very good car and big enough for me and my two teenage kids.

That was a completely un called for, concise, and comprehensive review. Thank you.

The interior and it’s space efficiency is the major selling point of this car, and it’s great to know that they age well. Maybe new with the 1.3 isn’t the way to go then, as reviewers constantly mention that the 1.3 needs to be revved hard to achieve anything nearing pace. I will continue my search and include the previous gen and the 1,5.

In terms of powe r, consider that it could either be the less powerful/more efficient I-DSI 8V version or the more powerful VTEC 16V version. .

If the Fit you’re looking at has the i-DSI engine , that means the power difference between the 1.3L Fit you are looking at and the 1.5L VTEC I have will be more pronounced than you may initially think.

For example... a 1.5L i-DSI is good for about 90HP while the VTEC version is good for about 109HP.

The 1.3L versions I think are around 80HP and 100HP for the i-DSI and VTEC versions respectively.

http://asia.vtec.net/Series/FitJazz/lseries/

I would link the Wikipedia page on the Honda L series, however some idiot keeps vandalizing the page with blatantly wrong information... listing versions that don’t exist and making other blatantly wrong changes like stating the i-DSI versions make more horsepower.

I’ve gone in to correct things a couple of times already, but I just checked and it has been re-populated with some garbage.
